Evenings & Weekends

The day students that attend Homefield College come from counties in the area, travelling home each afternoon, staying on into the evening on just one or two days. When they stay on, it is an excellent opportunity to mix with their fellow students in a slightly less-pressurised atmosphere and learn other skills during the evening. The skills they learn are often about interpersonal relationships, but also they learn practical skills such as preparing and eating a meal from ingredients that they've chosen and bought from the local shops.
The residential students learn practical skills about independent living and daily living in the natural and real setting of the college. They use the domestic-size kitchens to prepare their own meals, having planned their menus and bought the food. They use their own bedrooms and lounges as places to learn and practice their domestic skills.

They have leisure equipment on site to occupy their spare time with fellow students and learn to give and take in those activities. The evenings and weekends are also excellent opportunities to become involved in leisure activities away from college in the wider community, mixing with other leisure users who have no connection with the college. Those activities include swimming (for competition & pleasure), snooker and pool, athletics, gym, cinema trips, youth clubs, museums, walks and visits to places of interest.
Residential students clearly benefit from the continuity and consistency of learning by being here overnight all week, including weekends, throughout each half-term. Some students go home for the weekend about halfway through each half-term. For residential students the experience equips them well for a more independent living setting after they leave us.
