Canteen and cookery sessions develop vocational and living skills in the area of food preparation. These sessions are also used to develop students' skills in preparation for external work placements and to work at Barrow of Treats cafĂ©.  

Students learn:

  • Culinary skills; chopping, peeling, mixing, grating.
  • Where the produce is from
  • Nutrition and about foods that are good for us
  • Food hygiene
  • Domestic cleaning skills
  • Health and safety
  • Transferable work skills, such as working with others, problem solving, making choices, identifying the best tools for the job
  • English, maths and communication are embedded into everyday activities enabling students to develop their skills and apply them in a meaningful way, such as reading and following recipes
  • Students have opportunities to gain formal qualifications, at entry level, in NPTC (City and Guilds) Skills for Working Life.
