Homefield aims to integrate learning in Literacy, Numeracy and Communication (LNC) into all of the students' everyday practical activities during the day, during the evenings and during the weekends.
There are usually plenty of opportunities for students to put this learning into practice -
reading labels in the supermarketcounting out seeds in the geenhouseserving customers and using the till in our shop/cafestarting and maintaining a conversation during lunch and tea breaks
Literacy is reading, writing, use of language and development of vocabulary according to the level that suits the individual student.
Numeracy is use of numbers in adding, taking away, grouping, weighing, measuring and estimating according to the individual student's ability and prior knowledge.
Communication is an essential skill for many of our students because some may have limited vocal ability whilst others have a restricted range of words to communicate. We develop and use a lot of symbol-supported materials as well as Makaton where it is useful. Some students use electronic communicators.
Specialist LNC tutors join the practical sessions throughout the day. They support the session leaders and the students in developing students' LNC skills - often through objectives - by suggesting ways in which the skills can be developed during the practical tasks.
