Social & Life Skills

Students learn practical daily living skills and independent living skills according to their level of skills and knowledge.

They learn to not only develop practical skills that will help them become more independent in the future but also learn to work and enjoy activities alongside other people - fellow students and the general public.

The elements of Social and Life Skills are:

Menu Planning and Shopping - planning their own, mostly-healthy(!) meals for the week and going to local shops to buy the ingredients using money supplied by the college. The meals are intended to be nutritious, balanced and healthy. Good opportunities for planning, using literacy and numeracy skills, using money, developing safe road-usage skills, coping with contact with the public, working with colleagues and storing food for cooking.

Meal Preparation - using the food bought in menu plannning and shopping, cook the meals planned according to the timetable. Cooking in the small domestic kitchens generally on a one-to-one basis with staff. Good opportunities to develop cooking routines, specific cooking techniques and timing of preparation, cooking, serving and eating as well as organisational skills and literacy, numeracy and communication skills.

Domestic Skills - learning how to dust, polish, hoover, clean windows and tidy bedrooms and public areas with the guidance and support of staff generally on a one-to-one basis.

Personal Care - Getting up on time, brushing teeth, shaving, showering or bathing, choosing suitable clothes, getting dressed and groomed for the day and in preparation for the night's sleep.

Use of Cummunity Facilites - Going out to use shops, cafes, banks, libraries, cinemas, museums, and other places of interest. All students actively involved in using buses and trains to and from the local towns (Loughborough and Leicester) and learning to use roads safely.
