Peak Performance At Portland Games

We were delighted to join the annual Portland Games competition again this year. In the weeks leading up to the event, our Health & Fitness students prepared thoroughly by researching the venue, packing essentials and learning how to handle different situations as well as the value of teamwork and respect when competing.

On Game Day itself, both Pathway One & Pathway Two students travelled to Portland College in an accessible mini bus. Each student set themselves personal goals for the day, such as trying new sports, respecting team mates, accepting when situations don’t go their way and working collaboratively to achieve a good outcome – whatever the result!

When we arrived safely, all students received red ‘Portland Games’ t-shirts, attended a health and safety briefing so that they knew what to expect and where to assemble in case of a fire / fire drill. They then warmed up with seated exercises, following the instructions of the leader. This meant their muscles were loosened up ready for all the activities ahead!

Next, it was time for Homefield’s Football Team to go head to head with Portland Day Services. They all performed very well – winning 9-1 to but Gareth was awarded ‘Outstanding Football Player of the Day’. Sadly, having made it to the final round, they lost out to their opponents, Doncaster College. But, despite this, lots of insightful reflection was still had and teamwork got widely celebrated. Special shout outs to Josh (captain) for leading the team with such confidence and enthusiasm, Jude, Alex and Gareth for working so well together.

Abbie, Sam and staff member Alannah participated in boccia, showing excellent team skills and concentration. They won their first round, going through to the semi-finals, narrowly missing out on making it through to the final. Brogan visited last year, got a t-shirt but didn’t manage to stay to take part in the games. This year however, Brogan stayed and participated fully in the boccia tournament, collecting her medal at the end – what a massive achievement!

Thomas was team captain overall and made sure he was fair in giving everyone a turn. All students showed excellent teamwork and respect for each other, and the other colleges involved. It was a fantastic day, and everyone loved taking part and meeting students from across different counties who were also in SEN provisions! We may not have won the tournaments, but we showcased teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and resilience.

We’re very proud of Team Homefield! Thank you to Portland College for hosting and to all the other specialist colleges who took part too, it was a pleasure to compete alongside you all. See you next year!
